Ashawa Trail

Located just five miles north of Cook (30 minutes from Virginia) on Country Road 24, this 40 km trail system is designed to provide you with an exciting array of wilderness experiences including hiking and cross-country skiing.

A mix of black spruce swamps, gently rolling hills and challenging slopes make this trail system appealing for beginning to advanced skiers. Portions of the trail are not groomed for those who enjoy backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.

With wildlife including deer, moose, wolves and an abundance of birds inhabiting the area, the ski and hiking area is a great place for wildlife sightings. Seek solitude under the old pine stands and black spruce to regenerating aspen stands and new pine plantations. Or enjoy the stunning scenery of several rocky vistas – a visual treat for trail users.

The trail is adjacent to the west end of Lake Vermilion and the east end of Elbow Lake.
