Peloquin Wildlife Management Area

Visit this site for a chance to explore a young aspen – birch forest. There is also some balsam fir and white spruce. White-tailed deer and ruffed grouse are common here, and you could also see ducks, black bears, great blue herons, timber wolves, fishers, and woodpeckers. Forest songbirds include the chestnut-sided, black and white, Tennessee, and yellow warblers, as well as wood thrushes and veeries.

There are two small impoundments, one with an observation platform, where you can watch the beavers and other aquatic animals. The impoundments provide habitat for muskrats, beavers, river otters, ring-necked ducks, mallards, and wood ducks. The observation platform can provide some excellent viewing in late April and early May during waterfowl migration.

NOTE: Hunting is allowed in this area. Call ahead for hunting season dates. Hunters use this area mostly on weekends in October and early November.

Directions: Travel west from Hibbing on Hwy 169. Take a right on Hwy 65 for 23 miles. Turn right on Link Lake State Forest Road heading east 2.5 miles to the WMA sign. The trailhead and parking area is on the east side of large impoundment and is well marked. Motorized vehicles prohibited on trail.
