Mesabi Trail

The Mesabi TrailSM is a multi-use recreational trail that will, when completed, stretch 132 miles from Ely to Grand Rapids and link over 25 communities. The trail utilizes abandoned railways, logging and mining haul roads, and existing community bike paths. Currently, more than 80 miles of scenic trail are completed and paved. The trail is currently accessible in the Iron Range cities of Hibbing, Chisholm, Buhl, Gilbert, Virginia, Mountain Iron, Eveleth and Biwabik. The spring of 2004 will see 50 more miles of continuous paved trail from Nashwauk east to McKinley.

The handicap accessible trail is designed to accommodate bicyclists, in-line skaters, hikers, cross-country skiers and in some areas, snowmobilers. It winds past several sites on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail passes through rocky gorges, travels above wetlands, and is home to an abundance of wildlife, wildflowers and waterfowl. You'll travel the paths that once moved white pine timber, iron ore, immigrants and early settlers - don't forget your camera!

Fees for The Mesabi TrailSM are: Annual Pass: $12.00, Two-day Special: $3.00. 2004 rates. Fees are subject to change. Passes are available at ITCVB, 403 North First Street, Virginia, MN 55792. For information on trail maps and access points, call: 800-777-8497 or 218-749-8161.
